Bamboo

Bamboo is a diverse group of mostly evergreen perennial flowering plants making up the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae. The hard or woody, jointed, often hollow stems of these plants are used in construction and to make various kinds of utensils, as well as fabrics or yarns and with SBC, carbon friendly fuels.

Bamboo has an important role in biodiversity conservation and contributes to soil and water management, biomass production whilst additionally supporting the local rural economy. As bamboo plays key roles in biodiversity, land restoration, and livelihood improvement, it well fits into many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

.

Fast Regeneration
Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant, to be exact It is a grass with product qualities of wood, but it’s not a tree in a forest. Bamboo grows on average 15 x faster than a tree. Bamboo reaches an adult phase in 4-5 years and has short harvesting cycles due to continuous regeneration. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing sustainable bio-materials.

.

Sustainable
Bamboo is a zero-waste product. Bamboo absorbs large volumes of CO2, improves soil quality and known for its water retention. It grows without need for fertilizer nor pesticides. It grows well on degraded land and creates jobs in deserted areas where agriculture industry has disappeared.

.

Growing Demand
The demand for Bamboo is present and growing and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down so it really is a fast developing area for conservation and reaching UN Sustainable Development Goals. The most important uses of the product are as follows:

– Shoots are edible and used as vegetables.
– Textiles made from bamboo Fibres are sustainable and equally comfortable and strong.
– Bamboo Poles are harvested in different thicknesses for use in construction replacing bricks/cement/wood.
– Bamboo Composites are pressed in panels for board production, wall isolation replacing hardwood, rockwool etc providing a real sustainable alternative.
– Bamboo chips are used as raw material to produce bio methanol or as biofuel for renewable power and heat generation.
